About Locality

Our goal is historical preservation and appreciation. We hope to give newcomers and old-timers the resources and space to connect in an effort to eliminate their divide. We also hope to maintain a non-institutional record of community changes driven by small, individual contributions, and that this system creates agency among various communities.

The Problem

  • Lack of community engagement in areas experiencing rapid demographic change.

  • Minimal connection between new and lifetime residents of a neighborhood.

  • Lack of access to cultural institutions such as libraries and historical centers.

  • Hard-to-find visual histories of specific areas or neighborhoods.

  • Stories, memories, artifacts, and history can disappear without a trace.

  • Our Solution

Locality offers a solution to the problem of community engagement in the form of a website.

    Interactive Map

With an interactive map, users can search for and visualize neighborhood locations across different time periods.

    Collaborative Wiki

Through a collaborative wiki interface, users can share information and media about their experiences with these locations.

    Design Process

    Step 1: Paper Prototype

Decided on our initial design, narrowing down our tasks to searching and sharing.

    Step 2: Heuristic Evaluation

Reordered pages, added functionality, removed suggestions

    Step 3: Usability Tests

Improved labeling and simplified searching. Our Final Research Report can be found here.

    Step 4: Design Mockup

Created our high-fidelity prototype. Our Final Process Report can be found here.
